Hotmail was founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith as the first free web-based email service, aimed at providing secure and private communication. After gaining popularity, it was acquired by Microsoft and integrated into the Microsoft Network. Following several security issues, Microsoft revamped the service, rebranding it as Windows Live Mail. Later, Hotmail transitioned to Outlook.com to enhance competition with Gmail.
